14 Year Odyssey Culminates in Publishing Fantasy Novel
(ContentDesk) October 22, 2005 -- When Laura Duncan wrote the first words of her historical, fantasy novel, just published this past summer, she was 11 years old.From that time until this past summer when the novel "The Dragonhorse" was published by iuniverse, Duncan joined the US Army ROTC at the University of Portland, where she received her BSN nursing degree, than served in Balad Iraq, at the LSA Anaconda Air Base. Her writing odyssey began, as she tells it, "when I was eleven, I got a book describing the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, and how it buried several ancient Roman towns, Pompeii and Herculaneaum being among them. At the same time, I was drawing a fantasy horse with features like a Dragon's. After a bit of consideration, I tied the two together, making him the hero of this ancient tragedy and a slave girl (Lena) the heroine.""The story evolved from there," Duncan recalls.
"I made the horse a runaway slave. As punishment, the horse's evil mistress and witch, Soundria Felronia, transforms the horse into a fantasy dragonhorse. My book is a great read for those who liked the Harry Potter and Eragon Series." "The Dragonhorse" won the Editor's Choice Award, something given to fewer than 10% of iuniverse books.
