(ContentDesk) October 22, 2005 -- When Laura Duncan wrote the first words of her historical, fantasy novel, just published this past summer, she was 11 years old. From that time until this past summer when the novel "The Dragonhorse" was published by iuniverse, Duncan joined the US Army ROTC at the University of Portland, where she received her BSN nursing degree, than served in Balad Iraq, at the LSA Anaconda Air Base. Her writing odyssey began, as she tells it, "when I was eleven, I got a book describing the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, and how it buried several ancient Roman towns, Pompeii and Herculaneaum being among them. At the same time, I was drawing a fantasy horse with features like a Dragon's. After a bit of consideration, I tied the two together, making him the hero of this ancient tragedy and a slave girl (Lena) the heroine.""The story evolved from there," Duncan recalls.
"I made the horse a runaway slave. As punishment, the horse's evil mistress and witch, Soundria Felronia, transforms the horse into a fantasy dragonhorse. My book is a great read for those who liked the Harry Potter and Eragon Series." "The Dragonhorse" won the Editor's Choice Award, something given to fewer than 10% of iuniverse books. Others agree with the publisher: Local reviewers published at the http://www.amazon.com website call the book, "A must read for everyone." Cody Melvin, also of Killeen, TX, wrote, "Dragonhorse" was a "Very interesting story, very easy to get into and hold your attention. I enjoyed it very much."Tammy Melvin, Killeen, TX wrote, "This was a fun book with a very captivating storyline, interesting characters that come to life and a must read for people of all ages! A story that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go!"Duncan is donating her royalties on books sold through December.
"Half of my royalties will go to the soldiers, 25% to Bill O'Reilly's Wounded Warrior Project and 25% to the Killeen VFW."The 204 page paperback book sells for $14.95 through http://www.amazon.com. A $6.00 digital version is also available from the bookseller.Information: Laura L. Duncan, 254-519-4015.

Bible Study Basics
Putting the cart before the horse! This common trait, paradoxically, is human nature both at its best and worst. We are good at taking that "leap of faith" and making great strides towards a goal. Yet consistantly we ignore sound planning and preparation - two things what would virtually guarantee our success. Such is man!Embarking on a course of bible study seems to be no different. How often do we ignore the foundational exercises so we can jump right in? Everyone does.
And it works out just often enough to remain a tempting option. But fear not, there's help for you and I yet. And it comes in the form of the lowly dictionary. That's right, a dictionary.Language, especially the written language, is meant to be precise. The more important the writing, the more precise the language.
That's why contracts are so carefully worded. It's also why we pay lawyers large sums to circumvent what we have so carefully written but that's something for another day. With respect to the...

Saving Gorillas in Africa: Dian Fossey’s Legacy in Active Conservation
Orlando, Florida (ContentDesk) May 11, 2006 - The conservation legacy of Dr. Dian Fossey struggles to live on, more than 20 years after the mysterious death of the famous primatologist. Investigative reporter and author Georgianne Nienaber believes that through active conservation, the true legacy of Fosseys work can continue.Fosseys work to save the mountain gorillas in Rwanda is well-documented but after her death, continued conservation efforts and practices on behalf of big international non-governmental organizations (BINGOs) are open to discussion. According to Nienaber, There is no one who has worked in gorilla conservation since Dian was alive, who possesses her charisma, dedication and unimpeachable honesty. In addition, writings from Dian show that she wanted all financial contributions to her Digit Fund to be completely legal, down to the cost of a postage stamp. Nienaber said, This is a far cry from the state of wildlife conservation today, which has recently come under...

Horses in Need Find a Champion in Author Sara Gruen
(ContentDesk) September 10, 2005 -- Once again, novelist and horse activist Sara Gruen is rising to the defense of our most vulnerable equine friends.
Gruen, a lifelong horse lover, took on the PMU industry in her debut novel, Riding Lessons. Gruen says she learned of the production of pregnant mares' urine for use in hormone replacement therapy while researching the book."I was horrified to discover that the foals that are quite literally byproducts of this industry go to auction, and from there, almost always to slaughter. Now that the health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy are known, the problem has gotten worse. Hundreds of farms are closing completely.
It's no longer just the foals that are at risk--the mares and stallions are also being auctioned off. It's heartbreaking. I had to do something."Gruen donates a portion of her royalties to horse rescues and uses her media appearances to raise awareness of the ongoing slaughter of thousands of horses...
