Orlando, Florida (ContentDesk) May 11, 2006 - The conservation legacy of Dr. Dian Fossey struggles to live on, more than 20 years after the mysterious death of the famous primatologist. Investigative reporter and author Georgianne Nienaber believes that through active conservation, the true legacy of Fosseys work can continue.Fosseys work to save the mountain gorillas in Rwanda is well-documented but after her death, continued conservation efforts and practices on behalf of big international non-governmental organizations (BINGOs) are open to discussion. According to Nienaber, There is no one who has worked in gorilla conservation since Dian was alive, who possesses her charisma, dedication and unimpeachable honesty. In addition, writings from Dian show that she wanted all financial contributions to her Digit Fund to be completely legal, down to the cost of a postage stamp. Nienaber said, This is a far cry from the state of wildlife conservation today, which has recently come under much scrutiny in the media and scholarly circles.Nienabers book, Gorilla Dreams: The Legacy of Dian Fossey imagines a world in which Fossey and the slain gorilla, Digit, are able to review her life and work.
Honoring the African belief that the dead live on in spiritual form, Gorilla Dreams documents every fact about Fosseys life and questions the obstacles to achieving Fosseys dream of active conservation. Fossey wanted to see donations funneled directly into the preservation of habitat, anti-poaching efforts and support of indigenous communities.
Today, conservation organizations are reaping a windfall of government, foundation and corporate monetary support, while some programs have been tainted by conflicts of interest in the third world, said Nienaber.About Georgianne NienaberGeorgianne Nienaber is an investigative journalist and political activist based in rural northern Minnesota. With more than 30 years of experience, Nienabers work has appeared across the world, including her column for the Rwandan New Times. Her work has been highlighted in The United Nations Publication, A Civil Society Observer, AllAfrica.com and Zimbabwes The Daily Mirror. She is also author of the fiction expose, Horse Sense, which examines insurance fraud in the horse industry.Contact:Patricia F. KlierPR/PR Public Relations800-786-1764.
Don't Panic!
We can learn a lot from horses; I sure did. Before my wifegot me interested in them, I couldn't even spell hoarse (!);now I am learning from them while learning about them.Today's lesson was learned when Kelly, our mare, found herway into the breezeway of the barn. The breezeway is thearea where we humans walk when we feed or visit the horses, and also serves as a storage area for horse-relatedsupplies. It runs alongside the two stalls, which are onthe left as you walk in. (We get into the stalls from thebreezeway, the horses enter and exit through doorways on theopposite side.) The breezeway is full of horsey temptationsand dangers, including bags of food, treats, and medicationsthat, if ingested in large quantities could make themseriously ill: think of it as a candy store for horses.
Avery narrow candy store for horses.Kelly got in there when I carelessly left a gate open thatshould have been closed. There she was, sniffing away andlooking for goodies in a fairly confined space,...

Beware Gambling Can Increase Your Debt Problems
Are you the type of person who likes to take a gamble from time to time on things such as the result of a horse race? Would you say that you have an addiction to gambling? Do you lose more money than you win when gambling? Are you in debt? Are you hoping to reduce your debts by gambling? In this article, I write about a friend of mine who tried to gamble her way out of debt, however she was not successful and ended up with an even bigger debt problem.
My friend is called Emma. She is not exactly what you would call good with money and I am often amazed at the amounts she spends when we go out shopping together. Emma earns a fairly good wage but many people would probably expect that she earns three times this amount by her attitude towards money. If there is a store card available, Emma will sign up for it. I have often tried to advise her that she could find herself in a nasty position if she does not take more care with her finances, but she would never listen and thought...
To The Top Of Mount Shasta
Topped by snow and glaciers, Mount Shasta rises up above everything else when you approach it from the north. As soon as I saw it, I wanted to be up there. We were coming south from Oregon, after driving across the country from Michigan. A detour to northern California before heading home seemed like a good idea to both of us."I wonder if we could climb it?" I asked. John just nodded his head quietly, agreeing not to the climb, but to the fact that he was wondering the same thing. I checked the map.
Mount Shasta is 14,162 feet above sea level. I liked the idea of climbing that high."Have you ever climbed a mountain," John asked me. I thought about it for a while. "Not really. A lot of hills though."Mount Shasta City"Oh yes," the old woman at the visitor's center told us, "people climb Mount Shasta all the time." John pointed out the glaciers on the map she had given us.
"Oh, well, did you bring crampons and ice axes?" John looked at me, and I could only say, "I've heard...

14 Year Odyssey Culminates in Publishing Fantasy Novel
(ContentDesk) October 22, 2005 -- When Laura Duncan wrote the first words of her historical, fantasy novel, just published this past summer, she was 11 years old. From that time until this past summer when the novel "The Dragonhorse" was published by iuniverse, Duncan joined the US Army ROTC at the University of Portland, where she received her BSN nursing degree, than served in Balad Iraq, at the LSA Anaconda Air Base. Her writing odyssey began, as she tells it, "when I was eleven, I got a book describing the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, and how it buried several ancient Roman towns, Pompeii and Herculaneaum being among them. At the same time, I was drawing a fantasy horse with features like a Dragon's. After a bit of consideration, I tied the two together, making him the hero of this ancient tragedy and a slave girl (Lena) the heroine.""The story evolved from there," Duncan recalls.
"I made the horse a runaway slave. As punishment, the horse's evil mistress and witch, Soundria...
